Nursery

At West Earlham Infant and Nursery school we currently have classes for funded 2 year olds and funded 3 year olds. All of our nursery classes are sessional nurseries i.e. 3 hour sessions either morning or afternoons.

Our two year old room - Conkers class.

Our two year old provision was established for funded 2s, in 2013 and is led by an EYPS. Children attending Conkers class are offered a home visit and visits to the setting, prior to starting. Conkers provides a calm, nurturing and caring setting for very young children, with a focus on developing secure, trusting relationships with their Key Person and an emphasis on developing Communication and Language skills. Children have daily access to the inside and outside environment and provision focuses particularly on the development of children’s knowledge and skills in the Prime Areas of Learning.

Our 3 year old provision - Saplings and Seedlings class

These nursery classes are for funded 3 & 4 year olds. Depending on the month a child is born, they may attend for as many as 5 terms, or as few as 3. Like Conkers, the staff prioritise a carefully planned transition to support children to settle. All families with children eligible for a place, are offered a home visit and some visits to the class, prior to starting. This approach helps children to quickly become familiar with the environment and routines. The Saplings and Seedlings team are led by a QTS and an EYPS

Developing nurturing relationships with adults in the nursery and establishing routines are key. Children are supported to develop their independence in many aspects of nursery life e.g. dressing and undressing in waterproofs and wellies for outdoor messy play, accessing different areas within the environment, snack time and toileting. Established routines also enable children to have long periods of uninterrupted play. We believe children need this time to become focussed and engaged in their play as this is how young children learn best. Both the indoor and outdoor environments are planned with a range of opportunities, to support children’s development and to enable the Characteristics of Effective Learning: Playing and Exploring, Active Learning and Creative and Critical thinking. Children are encouraged and supported to take measured risks and decisions and to follow their interests. Provision is engaging, fun, stimulating and challenging, supporting all Areas of Learning, but with a particular focus on the Prime Areas, including a comprehensive Communication and Language programme.
