What is Pupil Premium?
Pupil Premium was introduced in 2011, it is an amount of money given to schools each year to support the learning and development of disadvantaged pupils.
This is based on research which shows that children from low income families perform less well at school. Children who are entitled to pupil premium often face challenges such as poor language and communication skills, less family support, lack of confidence and issues with attendance. Pupil Premium is used to benefit these children and to narrow the gap between them and their peers.
Pupil Premium is given to schools for:
- Children who have qualified for free school meals at any point over the past six years.
- Children who have been looked after under local authority care for more than one day.
- Children whom have left local-authority care as a result of one of the following:
- adoption
- a special guardianship order
- a child arrangements order
How does the School use Pupil Premium?
School can choose how to spend this money to best benefit children, often all children and not those just identified as Pupil Premium will benefit, however the aim is to work towards narrowing the gap. We review our Pupil Premium strategy at the start of every academic year.

Income Support
Income-based Jobseekers Allowance
Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
The guarantee element of Pension Credit
Child Tax Credit (with no Working Tax Credit) with a yearly income less than £16,190.
Working Tax Credit run-on.
Universal Credits (with an annual net earned income of no more than £7,400
Support under Part 6 of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
